GIMP (pronounce), meaning GNU Image Handling Program , literally “program GNU of handling of images”, in the past General Image Handling Program , is a Logiciel of treatment of image bitmap (drawing, final improvement, animation, etc) aiming at providing a free alternative to software such as Adobe Photoshop, with a slightly different interface.
The project was created in 1995 per Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis. It was intended initially for the systems Unix and GNU/Linux as Darwin (the base of Mac OS X) but also turns under Microsoft Windows.
Its official Mascotte is Wilber.
As its name indicates it, GIMP officially formed part of the project GNU.
Characteristics
- It is a Free software and free.
- Its functionalities make a professional product usually used of it.
- the dedicated format of GIMP is the format XCF and makes it possible to preserve the copies, channels, and other parameters suitable for an image published with GIMP (the equivalent of the format Psd under Adobe Photoshop).
- One of the great forces of GIMP is its capacity of “scriptage”. It is interfaced with many computer programming languages, in particular Guile Scheme and Perl (and Python in its version 2.0). That makes it possible to automate repetitive treatments and to write plug-ins.
- versions GIMP 2.0 and higher make it possible to join together the various windows in only one by a system of miters, thus facilitating their management.
- There exists a graft specialized in animation called GAP (GIMP Animation Package), allowing the importation and export in various video formats, to move, turn and increase objects on various layers, and to add sound to it.
Technical anecdotes
- GIMP occupies a particular place in free data processing. He is indeed regarded as the first of the free software at the same time general public and professional quality.
- Its availability encouraged a certain number of users to install a Distribution Linux for the first time.
- GIMP gave place, in addition to the creation of GTK+, with a great number of additional developments, like Gimp-Print, GIMPshop, CinePaint (formerly Film Gimp ), GIMP Mode or GEGL (GEneric Graphical Library).
- the user interface GNOME also uses the toolbox GTK.
- Although GIMP is compatible with virtually all the possible formats, in the countries where software patents is in application, it cannot reach by defect files encodés in formats under the blow of software patents of which the use is done under license (it was the case for example with the format GIF in the USA until the expiry of the patent, in France the GIF was available in Gimp without problem because the software patents did not apply to it). To publish in these formats it is often necessary to install a separated module, adapted to the country not being under the blow of these patents.
- GIMP functions without problem under KDE, its library being simply charged in doubled bloom with that with KDE. If RAM is sufficient, the performances do not suffer from it significantly, except a little application on the masks of data and instructions. It also functions under Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Solaris.
