Principality of Reuss connects elder

The Principality of Reuss, connects elder or principality of Reuss-Greiz (in German Fürstentum Reuß ältere Linie ) was one of the twenty-five States of the German Empire.

This principality covered 317 km ² for a population of 71.000 inhabitants (1905). Since the extinction of the branch Reuss de Gera, it had in common the seigniory of Gera with the principality of Reuss, connects junior. Its capital was Greiz.

She had as borders the Saxony-Meiningen, the Saxony-Altenbourg, the Saxony-Weimar and the Royaume of Saxony (Voigtland).

The elder branch, the counts Reuss de Greiz (in German Reuß zu Greiz ), was high with princely dignity in 1778 and carried the title since then of prince Reuss, connects elder ( Aeltere Linie , abbrégé in Ae.L. ) or prince Reuss de Greitz .

The members of this branch were called all Henri, and were numbered in a sequential way, i.e. it followed a sequence from 1 to 100 then totaled 1. The last series started with Henri 1st (born in 1693).

History

The principality of Reuss, connects elder, resulting, as the principalities of Reuss connects junior, of fusions and of divisions of the territories of the Maison of Reuss, the German Confédération in 1815 joined. Henri XXIII was characterized by his enmity with the Prussia, to which he was opposed at the time of the Guerre austro-Prussian of 1866, when the Prussian troops occupied its State. He united then the Confédération of Germany of North, then the German Empire in 1871, but it remained until its death in 1902 one of the more enemy relentless of Bismarck.

His/her son, Henri XXIV (1878-1927), having been recognized unable to reign, the regency of the principality was ensured by the branch junior.

After the fall of the German Empire, it was joined together with the Principauté of Reuss connects junior to form the Republic of Reuss ( Volksstaat Reuß ), which was incorporated in new the Land of Thuringe in 1920.
