The title of prince de Coligny
The title of Prince de Coligny is attested, inter alia, around the years 1190-1200. Belonging to the House of Coligny, it is one of the oldest princely titles of Europe.
It was carried in particular by Hugues, prince sovereign of Coligny and the Revermont, in the charter of donation which it made in favor of the Chartreuse de Portes (in the Bugey), probably before leaving for the Croisade. This charter starts as follows: Dominus Hugo de Coloniaco, miles, magnificus princeps Coloniensis , denied Deo and fratribus Portarum pro remedio animæ suæ ac parentum suorum, quicquid habebat in eremo Portarum, and quicquid of feudatariis illius dono vel emptione acquirere potuerunt.
What results in: The lord Hugues de Coligny, knight, splendid prince de Coligny , gives to God and the brothers Doors, for the safety of his heart and that of his parents, all that it has in the desert of Doors, and all that the brothers will be able to acquire, by gift or purchase, of its feudatories.
This princely title indicated the sovereignty of the Seigneur of Coligny on his grounds.
Prince de Coligny was with the number of the " Princes de Bourgogne " (or " princes of the kingdom of Bourgogne") ( principles regni Burgundiæ , or principles Burgundiæ ).
Dismemberment of the Principality
As from the 13th century, the principality of Coligny was dismembered with the profit of the many children of the family, while keeping a moral unit. Among the grounds which of it result, one finds:
- ground of Coligny-the-Old man, which will become the Marquisat de Coligny;
- ground of Coligny-le-Neuf, which will become the Baronnie de Coligny, then the Comté of Coligny, finally the Duché of Coligny;
- the Baronnie de Chevreaux;
- the Marquisat d' Andelot;
- the Seigniory of Gold chain.
