The Principauté of Bénarès is an old Indian principality. For the town of Bénarès, See Vârânasî .

History of the principality

The kingdom of Kâshî or Bânaras is founded by Khsetravridha of the dynasty Somavansa de Pratishthana. The city is devastated by the Shvetahûna, then the kingdom is conquered by the Musulman S in 1194. The territory is integrated then into Oudh, a territory tributary of the emperors moghols. Nâwab of the Oudh will yield it in 1775 to the British who will recognize it like family territory, before making it reach the statute of principality in 1911. The reigning family claimed to go down from the god Shiva and drew a great benefit from the pilgrimages in their city.
