The First of the Senate (Latin: Princeps senatus ) is the first member by precedence of the Roman Sénat under the Roman République. Although out of the Course honorum and not having the Imperium , this load gave an enormous prestige to that which had which it. It could indeed speak the first with the senate and thus had the attention of all.

After what one calls the fall of the République, the princeps senatus is the Empereur. During the Principat, the prerogatives increase. However, during the crisis of the 3rd century, others occupy the station. The future emperor Valérien occupies the station in 238, during the reign of Maximin Thrace and Gordien {{Ier}}.
