The expression “Prince of blood” is essential on the 16th century, to qualify the members of downward chalk-linings of holy Louis which thus belong to French royal chalk-lining and are ready to succeed the Crown in the event of extinction of the branch reigning according to the order of the Salic law. It succeeds the expression of “princes of the flowers of lily”.

Chalk-linings of princes of blood are at the 16th century:

  • Valois:
    • dukes of Alençon extinguished in 1525
    • dukes of Orleans, who reach the throne in 1498
*comtes of Angouleme, which reaches the throne in 1515
  • Bourbons:
    • dukes of Bourbons

    • dukes of Vendôme
*comtes of Saint-pol. extinguished in 1516
*princes of Cop
*princes of Conti
*ducs of Montpensier extinguished in 1582

The First prince of blood, first in the order of succession after the royal line, with the right to specific name of Mister the Prince. Mister the Duke is his son.
