For the little story, the origin of the title comes from what the Welsh did not want of a prince who speaks English. The king had the idea to propose his son, who was not yet in age of speaking.
In 1346, Jean the Blind man falls to the Bataille from Crécy in which it took part on the side of king de France. Its consistent Cimier of a great flight (two large wings of bird) having been seized by Edouard de Woodstock, he would have become the cimier, then the badge of this principality, just as its currency Ich Dien (“I am useful”).
Before the English conquest, rare were the local lords who were entitled " prince de Galles " ; indeed after the Roman occupation, the country had been divided into small concurrent principalities. Nevertheless Dafydd ap Llywelyn was recognized prince de Galles by the king Henri III of England. Its nephew Llywelyn ap Grufydd, prince de Gwynedd, claimed to him also the title in 1258. From 1400 to approximately 1410, Owain Glyndwr establishes a principality independent of Wales from which he was the sovereign, last Welsh to carry the title of " prince de Galles ".
The current holder of the title, the prince Charles, is it twenty-and-unième prince de Galles. Its predecessors were:
1301-1307 : Edouard II, king d' Angleterre
The wife of prince de Galles is called princess of Wales, and it receives like her husband the predicate of Royal Altesse . The title of Count de Chester is attached to that of prince de Galles since the 14th century.
