A meson is, in Physique particles, a composite particle (i.e. not elementary) made up of an even number of Quark S and antiquarks.

Properties

The mesons are Boson S sensitive to the strong Interaction, i.e. Hadron S having a whole Spin.

In the standard model, the mesons are compounds of an even number of Quark S and antiquarks. All the currently known mesons are composed of a pair quark-antiquark - the quarks of valence - and of a “sea” of pairs virtual quark-antiquark and also virtual Gluon S. The search for exotic mesons formed of more than one pair of quarks of valence (or at all) continues; candidates like the Tétraquark (four quarks of valence) or the Boule of glue (no quark of valence) were detected, but their existence for the moment is not confirmed.

The quarks of valence of a meson can exist like Superposition of states of savor; for example, the neutral pawn π0 is not made of a pair up - antiup or down - antidown but of a superposition of both. The mesons pseudoscalaires (of spin 0) have a minimal energy at rest, their quarks having an opposed spin, while the mesons vectors (of spin 1) have two quarks having a parallel spin.

All the mesons are unstable and have a average Lifespan very short.
