Price of the General governor

Since their creation in 1937, the Prix of the General governor became one of the most prestigious prices of the Canada. In a precise way, these prices would have to be called: “Price littéraires of the General governor” but, by convention, this title is used little.

The prices are granted for works in French and English in seven catégories : Romance S and New S, study S and Test S, Poetry, Theater, Literature youth - text, literature youth-illustration, and Translation.

The prices were inaugurated by a General governor of Canada, Lord Tweedsmuir off Elsfield, which, under its name “John Buchan”, wrote several novels, of which The 39 Steps .

At the beginning, the prices had only two prizes winner per year, and were limited to authors who worked in English. In 1957, the Conseil of arts of Canada assumed the administration of the prices, and added a monetary reward.

In 1980, the Council started to announce the finalists in advance, in an attempt to generate more attention and of interest.
