The Prix of religious literature was created in 1984 by the management Committee of the Trade union of the booksellers of religious literature, thus wishing to restore the " Price of the booksellers religieux" (formerly " Noël" price;).

Contrary to the catholic Grand Prix of literature, decreed by writers, the Price of religious literature is thus decreed by booksellers specialized in the religious literature.
