The price of Rome is a Grant for the students in Article.

It was initiated in 1663 in France under the reign of Louis XIV in the form of a annual reward for young promising artists (painters, sculptors and architects) who proved their talents by carrying out very difficult eliminatory contests. The price was organized by the royal Académie of painting and sculpture and was opened with its pupils. The prize winner gained a four years stay to the Palais Mancini with Rome with the expenses of king de France; the stay could be prolonged if the director of the institution considered it useful.

The contests were organized in Peinture, Sculpture, Architecture and Gravure, and in 1803, was added the musical composition. Gaining “First Grand Prix” was sent for three years to the Académie from France in Rome founded by Jean-Baptiste Colbert in 1666. There existed, according to the years, of the “Second Prices” which also made it possible to leave to Rome but for one moindre.
duration

The contest was removed in 1968 by André Malraux. This competition, since, is replaced by a selection on file and the Academies, joined together within the Institut of France, were supplanted by the State and the ministry for the Culture. Consequently, the boarders do not belong only any more to the traditional disciplines (painting, sculpture, architecture, engraving on medals or fine stones, musical composition) but also to artistic fields up to that point neglected or new (history of art, archeology, literature, scenography, photography, cinema, video and even kitchen). The selected boarders see themselves granting the possibility of improving during a stay from six to eighteen months (exceptionally two years) with the Académie from France to Rome (currently lodged by the Villa Médicis or even extra muros (out the walls) ).
