In the Greek Mythology, Priam (in Greek old Πρίαμος / Príamos ) is the mythical king of Troy at the time of the Trojan War. It is wire of Laomédon and the nymph Strymo.

Myth

According to the Pseudo-Apollodore, It is initially named Podarge or Podarcès ( Ποδάρκης / Podárkês , “light foot”). Following the fight between his father and Héraclès and of the catch of Troy by Héraclès and Télamon, he is the only male son of Laomédon which is saved. Not to become slave, it is repurchased by his sister Hésione and then takes the name of Priam , which means “repurchased”.

He fought in his youth with the Phrygiens against the Amazones

He east depicts in l´Iliade like showing of an immense kindness and an exemplary justice. Contrary to its advisers, he refuses to carry the blame on Helene for the war. He sees dying many his sons during the war (see below) and in particular Hector killed by Achille. This one refusing to return the body of Hector to its family for the funeral. Priam goes in the middle of the camps of the Greeks to beg there Achille who by respect will return the body of his son to him. The meeting of Achilles and Priam is one of the passages more moving by Iliade (Song XXIV). According to the Pseudo-Apollodore and Hygin, it is killed by Néoptolème, the son of Achilles.

Descent

It is known to have a many offspring, according to Iliade, it has in all 50 wire and 12 girls, but Homère does not quote any by name which 23 wire and two girls. As for Pseudo-Apollodore, it gives list of 46 boys (or 47 according to whether one counts or not Troïlos which is known as son of Hécube and Apollo) and eight girls. Hygin gives 55 names
