On a modern sailing ship (gréement bermudien), the preventer shroud ( 5 ) is a cable connecting the head of Mât to the back of the ship: it contributes to maintain the mast in its driving position into longitudinal. It can be simple or double.

The traction of the preventer shroud is often adjustable using a Ridoir placed at the end fixed at the bridge of the ship. The preventer shroud can sometimes be souqué when the wind forci: this action, by stiffening the Guindant Mainsail and sail of front, makes it possible to flatten these two veils. By weak wind, the preventer shroud could be weakened to dig the veils. With the bearing paces, the preventer shroud could be weakened.

On the sailing ships having two preventer shrouds, energy of the head of the mast to the two corners of the Tableau postpones, a hoist laid out between the two with breast height generally makes it possible to regulate the tension of it.

Certain sailing ships are deprived by it, because the form of their bars of arrow ( 4 ) makes it possible to shift the Hauban S backwards and to retain the mast. They are bars of pushing arrows.

The preventer shrouds can be compensated by Bastaque S.

The preventer shroud belongs to the standing Rigging.

Formerly, the word indicated also a very large caulking iron.
