In waiting of the execution, Borden receives the diary of Angier and starts to read it.Flashback. In 1887, Alfred Borden and Robert Angier work as assistants of a Master of the magic, called “the Milton the magician”, in a particularly dangerous turn during which the wife of Angier, Julia, bound, releases herself from a tank hermetically closed and filled with water. One day, Julia drowns under the eyes of her Angier husband, and this one shows Borden to have attached it with a node of cord new and more difficult to demolish. Borden is acknowledged unable to remember the node which it had carried out.
The men separate then, and Borden made career alone under the name of the “Professor”. He engages a " ingénieur" name of Fallon, and marries a spectator called Sarah, with whom it has a girl, Jess. Angier as for him becomes “Large Danton”, a name which had been suggested to him by his late wife. He is helped by a " ingénieur" Harry Cutter and recruiting a young named assistant Olivia. Angier, disguised, begins his revenge by drawing a shot with a true ball on Borden during a turn from magic from this one, making him lose two fingers of the hand. Borden, later, disguised also, causes to him the failure of a number of Angier of disappearance of bird, turn of magic during which the bird is killed in front of the dissatisfied public (a person will be even wounded).
At this point in time Borden installs its turn of magic of “the transported man”. In this turn of magic, where the magician is transported of a case to another, Cutter is persuaded that Borden uses a double. Angier then engages a man resembling to him, Olivier Root, in order to reproduce this new turn of magic which he baptizes “the new transported man”. But Angier is frustrated to carry out the major part of the turn and to leave the acclamations and applause of the public to its double, Root. He thus entrusts to his assistant, Olivia, the mission of being made engage by his Borden adversary and of stealing his secrecy to him. Olivia falls in love with Borden, but provides to Angier the newspaper of Borden in which it describes all its turns.
