Since the July 12th 1979, date of the independence of the British ex-colony, the republic of the Kiribati elected the following presidents:
- Ieremia Tabwai (old orthography: Tabai, marked Tabaï) (the youngest Head of State of the the Commonwealth, at only 29 years), National Progressive Party , until 1991
- Teatao Teannaki
- Teburoro Tiito (or according to the old Tito orthography, Sito decides), three successive mandates as from 1994, reversed by a vote of distrust at the beginning of 2003, for lack of majority at the Parliament.
- Annotates Tong since 2003 (end of mandate 2007, one of the four candidates designated by the Maneaba nor Maungatabu elected in August 20007).
The president (in Gilbertin you beretitenti ) is elected for four years (but it can be reversed by a vote of distrust of the Parliament). Three mandates maximum. The characteristic of the parliamentary Régime Gilbertin is that the President of the Republic, Head of the State, also directs the government and thus must as a preliminary, being elected appointed before the Parliament does not present to the presidential election three or four candidates, chosen in his center, with the Universal direct suffrage. Its vice-president does not replace it in the event of vacancy of the capacity but directs the executive in his absence. If it is dislocated of its functions by a vote of distrust (like a Prime Minister), it is the Council of State made up of three members who takes over temporarily the duties, while waiting for the organization of the legislative elections, then presidential.
Presidential election of the July 4th 2003
Election
The president is elected according to an original system: it is at the beginning a deputy elected, chosen by the
Maneaba nor Maungatabu in its center, among three, at least, or four, to the maximum, candidates with the presidency who are then decided between, in the majority simple, by an election by the universal direct suffrage. In the event of vacancy, it is the president (
chairman ) of the Council of State which takes over temporarily the duties and not the vice-president.

Miss Teima Onorio, a woman of
Arorae was designated as vice-president in July
