The République of South Africa succeeded with the South African Union the May 31st 1961.
The president's function then succeeded that of Governor-general of South Africa.
Of 1961 with 1984, the function of the Head of the State was honorary and was distinguished from that of the chief of the government ensured by the Prime Minister.
In 1984, with in force of the Parliament tricaméral, the function of Prime Minister of South Africa was abolished and its prerogatives and capacities transmitted to the President, from now on Head of the State and the government.
