Presidential election of the United States of America 1996
The presidential election of the United States of America 1996 was held Tuesday November 2nd 1996. She saw to clash the Outgoing president Bill Clinton and the senator of the Kansas Bob Dole. Clinton benefitted from a flourishing US economy and absence of credible foreign threats, and easily gained the election at the expense of Pares, whose countryside was described as tern.
Context
In 1995, the Republican party had the wheel in motion following the electoral victories carried out during the renewal of the Congress. In these elections, the Republicans carried out by Newt Gingrich gained the majority of the seats at the same time to the Chambre of the representatives and the American Sénat for the first time since forty years.
Primary educations
Republican primary educations
Many republican candidates entered the race to face an apparently weak Outgoing president, Bill Clinton. Among those:
-
Lamar Alexander - Former governor of the Tennessee;
- Stalemate Buchanan - Commentator political on television and former adviser of the president Richard Nixon;
- Bob Dole - Chief of the republican group to the Senate originating in the Kansas, and former candidate with the vice-presidency in 1976 under the candidature of Gerald Ford;
- Bob Dornan - Representative of the California;
- Steve Forbes - Billionaire, wire of Malcolm Forbes and owner of the magazine Forbes ;
- Phil Gramm - Senator of the Texas;
- Alan Keyes - Commentator with the radio;
- Dick Lugar - Senator of the Indiana;
- Arlen Specter - Senator of the Pennsylvania;
- Morry Taylor - tycoon of the tire originating in the Ohio.
The former general of the US Army Colin Powell was often announced like a potential candidate for the Republicans. Nevertheless, the November 8th 1995, Powell stated not to be interested by the nomination.
The candidature of Bob Dole, the favorite, had to suffer competition from the conservative Pat Buchanan who gained several caucus. It was not finally enough to obstruct the victory of Pares, which was invested at republican Convention the August 15th 1996. The former representative and minister Jack Kemp were appointed like candidate with the vice-presidency.
Democratic primary educations
The primary educations of the democratic party were disputed little, insofar as the outgoing president Bill Clinton did not meet notable opposition to its nomination.
Other candidates
the American Greens indicated Ralph Nader like their candidate with the presidential one. Nader accepted the nomination, but the Jura to spend only 5000 $.
The party American reformist designated his founder Ross Perot to contribute for its first election as an official political party.
Howard Philips was indicated by the national-conservative U.S. Taxpayers Party to be its official candidate.
The electoral campaign
Without notable opposition at the time of the primary educations, Clinton could concentrate rather early on the presidential one, whereas Dole was forced to hold a speech in favor and to spend its funds in its combat for the nomination. In the final analysis, Clinton conducted campaign as from the summer by defining its adversary as an old conservative far away from the things whereas Dole was not in position to answer.
During all the countryside, Clinton succeeds in maintaining an advance comfortable in the surveys on Dole and Perot. Only Clinton and Dole appeared at the time of the televised debates, thus moving away Perot and the other minor candidates from the debate. Perot, which had been able to take part in the debates of 1992, carried out the business in justice, requiring damages for its non-participation and the weak cover by the media of its countryside.
Finally, Clinton gained the Presidency with a notable advance over Dole (49,2% of the voices against 40,7%), and Perot obtained only half of the voices which had gone on him in 1992 (8,4%). Clinton did not manage however to obtain the absolute majority to which he aspired.
On 196.498.000 potential voters, 49% went to vote.
