The President of the the European Parliament supervises all the activities of the European Union and its constitutive bodies. It chairs the plenary sessions, the meetings of the office and the conference of the presidents. It represents the Parliament in the foreign relations, in particular the international relations.

The Bureau is the organization of standardization responsible for the budget of the Parliament and the administrative subjects. It includes/understands the President , fourteen Vice-Présidents , and five Questeurs which is responsible for the administrative subjects connecting itself directly to the member of the European Parliament. All the members of the Office are elected for one 30 months period, the elections being held with the beginning and half of each five years legislature.

The Conférence of the Presidents is composed of the president of the Parliament and the presidents of the political groups, and the body responsible for the political organization of the Parliament.

Hans-Gert Pöttering is the President-in-Office of the European Parliament since January 18th, 2007 (election on January 16th). It succeeds Josep Borrell Fontelles.

Election of the President, July 20th, 2004

The President needs a majority of voice in order to be elected. If that is not the case with the first turn, of the new candidates can join the second and third turns.

In practice, in 2004, the European Popular party (EPP) supported the candidate of the European Socialist party (PSE), which easily carried out a majority with the first turn. It is provided that the PSE will support the candidate of the EPP for second half of the legislature.
