The president of Reich ( of Reichspräsident ) was the Head of State of Germany under the Weimar Republic. He was elected with the Vote for all direct for a seven years mandate.
The Constitution of Weimar entrusted important capacities to him to balance those of the Reichstag, so much so that it was qualified “substitute of emperor” ( of Kaiserersatz ). It named and revoked the Chancelier of Reich and the Gouvernement of Reich, named the judges and the civils servant, represented Reich abroad and was the supreme leader of the armed forces of Reich. Its position was still reinforced by the right to dissolve the Reichstag, and article 48 of the Constitution, which enabled him, in the event of urgency, to suspend the application of certain basic rights and to take all measurements which it considered necessary to the re-establishment of safety and the order.
The function had two holder for the republican period, Friedrich Ebert and Paul von Hindenburg. In 1934, after the death of Hindenburg, it was joined together with that of Chancelier of Reich to the profit of Adolf Hitler, which took the title of “Führer and chancellor of Reich”.
