President of Iran

The President of Iran has a very important role in the political institutions of the Iran. In the beginning, the station was rather honorary at the time where it had been created, according to the constitution of the Islamic Republic, according to the fall of the Shah in 1979. The presidency became an increasingly important station, especially since 1989. The current president is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Role in the state

In contrast with the majority of the republics, the effective leader of the Iranian institutional system is not the president but the Supreme guide , which is a religious character selected by a Assemblée of the experts. The Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini, for example, which east can be leading the most famous in occident, was supreme guide and not president.

In spite of that, the president of the Iran fills of many functions of Head of State, like the fact of naming the ambassadors. Since the modification of the constitution in 1988 which removed the station of Prime Minister and amalgamated the majority of the tasks of the Prime Minister with those of the president, the presidency of the republic became a significant station in term of governmental influence.

The president is responsible for the implementation of the constitution and the exercise of the executive powers, except for those directly related to the supreme guide. The president names and supervises the the Council of Ministers, coordinates the decisions of the government and selects the policies of the government before they are transmitted to the Parliament. Eight vice-presidents assist the president, as well as a cabinet of 21 ministers, who all must be approved by the Parliament. Contrary in many other states, the executive branch in Iran does not control the armed forces. Although the president names the Ministers for the information and defense, it is of habit which the president obtains the explicit agreement of the supreme guide for these two ministers before submitting them to the Parliament for the vote of confidence.

Moreover, as a more elected high ranking authority of the country, the president is responsible with respect to the public opinion whereas the supreme guide is not it.

The procedure of approval is regarded as a verification of the credential of the president, and, generally, only a negligible minority of candidates are approved. In the election of 1997 for example, only 4 of the 238 potential candidates could be presented to the election. No woman forever authorized to present itself. The Western observers criticize this system of approval which is a manner for the council of the Guards and the supreme guide to make sure that only fundamentalist candidates as they can gain the presidential station.
