Présent is a French daily newspaper of the evening, declaring national and catholic inspiration. Founded in January 1982 on the initiative of the Center Henri and André Charlier and of Christendom-Solidarity, establishment and association catholic traditionalists, it intends to be in opposition to the political system, cultural and social current. Its principal currency is God, Family, Fatherland , borrowed from the chief rabbi Jacob Kaplan.
Ideological positioning
A “national-Catholicism”
Présent has always challenged, for twenty years, the classification of “Extrême right-hand side”. Jean Madiran, cofounder of the newspaper, particularly attempted to deny this membership. Mr. Madiran was however defined as being “on the right extreme line”. The current national-catholic of the newspaper Présent is clearly classified with the extreme right-hand side by Laurent de Boissieu, journalist political with the Cross , on its political France personal site, and by historians like Michel Winock. He asserts a catholic inspiration, of a Catholicism “of tradition” but without following the sacerdotal Fraternité Saint-Magpie X in all his logic, the inefficient newspaper being in particular stated to approve or disapprove the sacring of four bishops by M {{gr.}} Lefebvre the June 30th 1988.
In the edition of the June 23rd 1983, in connection with Robert Badinter, then Minister for Justice, Present , appealing the “wandering furrier”, written:
-
“By heritage, it is for the migrant one against the sedentary. For the cosmopolitan against the native. For the marginal one against the company which rejected Badinter a long time. For the assassin against assassinated. ”
Présent has as usual references the theorists of the French Contre-révolution and the Nationalisme counter-revolutionary, Charles Maurras and the French Action, the “high figure of the marshal Pétain”, Mgr Freppel (bishop violently opposed to the French revolution, and which fades the centenary of it, in 1889). He qualified “formidable literary political review” the French Books , newspaper collaborationnist during the second world war. After the death of the pro-Franco general Antonio Aleman, Présent calls some with “a new spirit of crusade”. The February 6th 1995, the daily newspaper organized a public meeting in the honor of Robert Brasillach, chaired by Maurice Bardèche, which is defined itself as “fascist”. The national revolution of Philippe Pétain is explicitly glorifiée there.
Présent is in addition opposed to the Voluntary interruption of pregnancy and the Contraception.
Present and the FN
In addition, Présent is recognized “near” to the National front and Jean-Marie Le Pen, without however in being the emanation. In the shape of a monthly magazine éponyme having preceded it several years, it is besides former to the emergence of this party on the French political scene in first half of the Années 1980.The bonds are however much stronger than that: Pierre Durand, founder and director of the newspaper, were also one of the founder of the FN, of which it was, since 1972, the first national treasurer. In the same way, Georges-Paul Wagner, regular contributor of the newspaper, were appointed National front of 1986 to 1988.
The differences in appreciation between the newspaper and this political training however appeared during the two last decades, most obvious having related to their positions on the war in Iraq in 2003. They can however seem the reflection of the coexistence, within the FN of various currents of the French extreme-right-hand side. At the time of the scission of Bruno Mégret in 1998, the newspaper refused to take party, which involved a call to the boycott on behalf of Le Pen.
The drafting of the newspaper is regarded as a component among others of what it calls the “national movement”, each one with its specificity. The expression of dissensions on certain points not preventing an opposition common to the political system, social and cultural current. This position is close to that of Radio Courtesy concerning the concept “plural line”. But Present , unlike this radio, follows a resolutely catholic line.

Under the title “Olivier Biffaud because he lies twice”, Alain Sanders had qualified Mr. Biffaud “of kind of under Rollat of poor, turned sour militant, ex-trotskard (or assimilated), reconverted into the report/ratio flicard way Plenel”. The court estimated that they were there “charges serious” ranges against Mr. Biffaud, “whose probity and impartiality are, in the attacked article, under a title of a bad particularly hateful taste, meanly blamed in terms whose character of prudence and measurement not only is exclusive in good faith, but still increases the undergone damage”.May 2nd, 1990, Pierre Durand, director of Present , is condemned to eight thousand francs of fine for “racial slandering”, following an article of Jean-Yves Gallou.
