Montauban (in Occitan Montalban ) is a common French, it is the chief town and the prefecture of the department of Tarn-et-Garonne in area the Midday-Pyrenees.

Its inhabitants is called Montalbanais.

Geography

Montauban is located at about fifty Kilomètre S with the Northern of Toulouse in the department of the Tarn-et-Garonne, with the junction of the Tescou and the Tarn.

The construction material more used is the red brick, which gives a typical aspect to the city.

History

In 1144, the Count of Toulouse, Alphonse the Jordan, founds Montauban. It is the first country house of the Histoire.

In the Years 1530 and following, the population of Montauban converts with the Protestantisme, to be entirely huguenote at the beginning of the wars of religion. In 1559, the mass for the death of Henri II is known as only at the end of eight month. In January 1561, the Protestant worship is public; in August, the catholic monks are in impossibility of preaching. The bishop is driven out, and all the consuls of the city are Protestant.

In 1562, at the time of the first war of religion, Montauban resists three attempts at seat of Monluc. The churches are not returned to the catholics, in 1563, that under the threat. Also, when Charles IX makes his Tour de France royal (1564 - 1566), accompanied by the Cour and Large by the kingdom: his/her brother the duke of Anjou, Henri de Navarre, the cardinal of Bourbon and Lorraine, it is required that Montalbanais shave their fortifications to accommodate the king. After negotiations, it is accepted, and the king makes his entry on March 20th, 1565. He is accommodated in the jubilation. If the bishop, Jacques II of the Meadows-Montpezat, can return, it does not remain.

In 1571, the Peace of Saint-Germain, signed between the King Charles IX and the admiral Gaspard de Coligny, grants the Protestants four fortified towns: La Rochelle, Cognac, Montauban and the Charity-on-Loire. A new enclosure is built.

In 1598, Henri IV, having granted by the edict of Nantes of the religious rights to the Protestants of France, grants to the latter “places of safety” 51, more of the places of refuge. Montauban is one of the principal places of safety granted by the king, with Nimes and La Rochelle. It thus acquires the right to be protected while building and while maintaining the fortifications.

In 1621, the duke of Luynes, constable of France which carries out the war against the Protestants, raises the Siège of Montauban in spite of an impressive artillery concentration. The city resists the heavy fire of 400 parts (one speaks about the 400 blows of Montauban) whose clochet of the Saint-Jacob church still keeps some traces. This history the Four Hundred Blows of Montauban is, in fact, a legend, which the historian max Lagarrigue showed.

In 1790, Montauban belongs to the department of the Lot, and is chief town of a district, then sub-prefecture with the creation of the prefectoral administration, in 1800. It is necessary to await 1808, year of the creation of the department of Tarn-et-Garonne by Napoleon I {{er}}, so that the city becomes chief town of department.

Tourist monuments and places

Montauban is classified town of art and history.
  • Montauban is a city whose tourist value is choked sometimes a little by the justified interest carried to his/her sisters of “colors” Toulouse and Albi.

Actually it constitutes an architectural curiosity of most characteristic of the area. Founded in 1144 by the count of Toulouse, like many small towns of South-west (the country house S), she answers perfectly the characteristics of these last: the layout of its streets (which cut all in right angles) defines a rectangular central place. The old center is thus very homogeneous in the direction where no modern building comes to break the harmony of the frontages of bricks generally built at the 17th century and 18th century. Certain buildings and architectural complexes are worth the turning more particularly:
  • the Museum Ingres (old town hall and episcopal palate): built at the 17th century on the remainders of the palate that the Prince Noir occupied during the one hundred year old war. Some of the rooms of this last can be visited with the basements besides. It shelters works of the two most famous inhabitants of the city: Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres and Emile Antoine Bourdelle.
  • the National Place: rebuilt at the 17th century following a fire, its double line of arcades arched on intersecting ribs is a wonder.
  • the old bridge: an extraordinary work built on the orders of Philippe Beautiful the about 1300. The jewel does without comments, it was anyway born 300 years before oldest from the Parisian bridges and is contemporary with the Ponte Vecchio of Florence.
  • the Saint-Jacob church: its base of the 13th century still carries the marks of the Boulet S launched at the time of the Siège of Montauban by Louis XIII.
  • the cathedral. Atypical stone vessel in a town of brick. Its construction was ordered by Louis XIV to mark the presence of the royal capacity and Catholicism in a traditionally Protestant city.
  • Old the College: rebuilt after a Fire which destroyed this college Jesuit in 1961, this building is very representative of brick constructions which make of Montauban the " rose" city; and in particular the Tourist office of the city shelters.
