Geography
The city is located in small North-eastern crown of Paris, in the south of the department of the Seine-Saint-Denis. It is bordering on Paris, Pantin and the Lilacs. The commune is built on the northern side of the hill of Belleville.Pre-Saint-Gervais is, in surface, the smallest commune of the department of the Seine-Saint-Denis, with only 70ha.
History
The place bears the name of " Pre-Saint-Gervais" since 1217, this name comes from Latin pratum , meadow, and of Gervasius , martyr and saint Milanese whose relic was offered to the church of the place by the Abbaye of Saint-Denis.The Village remained a long time a simple dependence of Pantin, as well at the level administrative as spiritual, which was at the origin of the combat of the inhabitants to obtain the independence of their parish as of 1588 by the construction of a Chapelle (devoted in 1613). This one was obtained only in 1787.
The common takes the name of " The-pre-Pelletier" in 1794 in homage to the revolutionist Louis-Michel Lepeletier de Saint-Fargeau assassinated to have voted the death of the king and to which the property was close to the village; it took again its name of origin in 1801.
In 1814, at the time of the Battle of Paris, the Pre one was devastated by the engagements against the troops wurtembourgeoises.
In 1840, the construction of the Fortifications of Paris isolated it from Belleville. January 1st, 1860, pursuant to the law of June 16th, 1859, the commune, already exiguous, loses twenty-seven Hectares annexed by the town of Paris beyond the fortifications of Paris. Its surface is then reduced to 109 Hectares, before being still limited to 72 Hectares in 1870 after the annexation by Paris of the army grounds.
The first plates of street appeared in Pre-Saint-Gervais in 1881.
In 1914, it is the day before the First World War that Jean Jaurès gave his famous speech on peace to Pre on the Colline of the Belvédère. It had already intervened with the Balcon of the Mairie in 1913 against the passage of the Military service at 3 years.
