Prana

According to Indian spirituality, the prāna is a universal vital energy which impregnates all, and which one particularly assimilates by the air that one breathes. One can translate the term Sanskrit prāna by vital breath .

In Yoga

In the Yoga, the prāna is the energy which circulates by the Nadi S (channels) and that one can feel a such sometimes extreme fluid (through pingala nadi ), sometimes refreshing (through Ida nadi ), generating very variable feelings and emotions.

One distinguishes five vital breaths, also called Vāyu S, i.e. winds:

  • prāna: the prototype of the other winds, associated with the inspiration, ingestion and perception.
  • apāna, wind going down associated with the excretion and reproduction,
  • udāna, ascending wind, associated with the expiry, balance and the expression.
  • samāna, equalizing wind, associated with digestion and the metabolism
  • vyāna, diffusing wind, associated with circulation and the musculature.
One will note certain divergences as for these various functions, like their association at bodies, elements and zones of the body.

In the Chinese and Japanese contexts, one speaks about IQ , chi or ki to indicate this universal form. It would be at the origin of all the energy forms and would appear through particular frequencies according to the various existential plans.

The electronic theory

Andre Van Lysebeth, in his work Pranayama was one of the first in occident to put forth the assumption that the prana corresponds to the negative Ions of the surrounding air, well the prescientific pranic theory sees there a vital force possibly more fundamental, at the base of any life and any conscience. According to him, there is not a doubt that the prāna is the electronic energy of the air, which explains the immediate energisation by a deepened breath, whereas the electrochemical energy of oxygen as such did not have time to go to the cells by blood way. That seems even more obvious for immediate satisfaction to eat: the negative ions directly would be absorbed, whereas chemical digestion is supplemented only in approximately 4 hours. At all events the benefit of the negative ions amply is documented, although discussed.

In the literature

In the cycle of Dune of Frank Herbert, the Prāna-Bindu is also used as particularly effective technique of combat.
