Praguery

The Praguerie (1440) is a revolt carried out by the large vassal ones of France against the military reforms of the king Charles VII. The dolphin, future Louis XI, belonged to revolted. The sling is named “praguery” in allusion to the revolt of the Hussites to Prague, at the beginning of the 15th century.

The revolt was born from the diffuse dissatisfaction with the large lords. One of the precursory events is the plot of Jean II of Alençon, Jean IV of Armagnac and Charles Ier de Bourbon. This one aimed at eliminating two advisers from the king, Charles of Maine and the constable of Richemont. The conspiracy is discovered and does not have a continuation.

In October 1439, the General states joined together with Orleans claim that one puts an end to the exactions “flayers”, troops of soldiers without balances which devastated the campaigns and proposed their services with highest offerer. The November 2nd, Charles VII answers their waitings by an ordinance carrying reform of the army. The princes refuse the ordinance: they used much these “truck drivers” and did not want to leave of it the monopoly with the king and Richemont. To dissatisfied initial other large lords are added, like Georges of Trémoille, enemy personnel of Richemont who tried to assassinate it in 1433. Dunois, the bastard one of Orleans, also joined them. It fears that Charles VII does not give up Charles of Orleans, their half-brother, in his negotiations with the English.

In February 1440, Jean d' Alençon gains the Louis dolphin. It is a question of putting the king under supervision, of placing Louis at the orders and of eliminating Richemont. The treason of the dolphin is explained by the loathing of Charles VII to leave him a prerogative or a territory to be controlled. Entreated take the weapons then. The royal reaction is fast. Abused by the royal troops, the conspirators must yield the ground in Poitou, from where the revolt left, to take refuge in Bourbonnais. The nobility refuses to follow the large vassal ones and the Thirteen good towns of Auvergne their leaven also the door. Crushed, they are subjected as of July. The dolphin comes to résipiscence to Cusset. Charles VII fact of distributing pensions to the revolted lords, reward his faithful and entrusts to his son the government Dauphiné.
