Praga Południe ( Prague of the South ) is a district of the center of Warsaw located on bank Is river the Vistula.

History

The sector of Praga Poludnie remained innocupé since at least the 7th century. One found there traces of occupation older than Warsaw itself. However the wet and often flooded ground was abandoned as soon as Warsaw was founded. For 16th century it has again been populated, but because of the lack of communication with Warsaw (until the 19th century, there was no bridge making it possible to cross the the Vistula), it was only one suburbs of no importance.

Praga Poludnie shared the destiny of a greater sector called Praga, which was the suburbs Is of Warsaw. At the 17th century current Praga Poludnie was transformed into military camp. At the 18th century the Saxonne guard of kings de Pologne is quartered there, the sector was called Saska Kepa (literally rise in Saxon the ).

However, until the beginning of the 20th century the sector maintained its character rural. Praga Poludnie is officially incorporated in Warsaw in 1916. With the expansion of Warsaw and Saska Kepa became its center. Between 1920 and 1930 it became one of the most popular sectors of the middle-class of Warsaw.

During and after the Second world war, the city was not destroyed. In spite of several plans, it was not industrialized either, which made it possible the zone to maintain much of its original nature, quiet and peaceful. Currently, several luxurious buildings were built in the sector, but the authorities do not project to build more residences and want that are character is preserved.

Independently of the architecture of Saska Kepa , principal attractions of the district are the Skaryszewski park, the lake Kamionek and the reserve of Olszynka Grochowska. The battle field of Olszynka Grochowska (1831) is located at the borders of the district.
