History
In 804, in the valley of Lez, with good ten kilometers of Montpellier current (but non-existent at that time) was a Roman villa. It is this " Villa Pratis " who is mentioned into 804 in the cartulaire of Gellone . In 1144 the church Saint Jacques the Major one is built.
In 1156, Prades Lez is a parish. The village, from very small size, will develop with the Middle Ages behind a medieval enclosure dated from the XII and XIIIes centuries, whose vestiges of two doors (North and South) are still visible today, on both sides from the street from the Old man Prades located behind the church.
In 1845 the building of the current post office is inaugurated. At the time, it accommodates the school complex of the village. Its construction has succity a polemic: at the time, the brook " Cantarelle " was not buried and the building was outside the village, thus of many people saw there a danger to the children who were to cross the brook to go to the school, brook which in rainy weather saw its level going up rather quickly. The playground occupied the place of the current carpark at the edge of the secondary road.
During this century also the need appears for aggrandir the church because of the increasingly important lack of places for the reception of the inhabitants. The project of aggrandissement is finally validated and the rebuilding of the church is completed in 1891. The Romance bell-tower is a vestige of the old church. Inside a virgin of the 17th century is.
August 11th, 1889, the council is brought to discuss on the need for changing the nomination of the village. Several complaints relate to the distribution of the mails and packages not arriving at the village. This holds owing to the fact that several villages bear the name of Prades in the area of Languedoc-Roussillon - Prades in the Pyrenees Orientales, Prades Cessenon…. - it is thus quite naturally attached the name of the river " Lez" who crosses the village in Prades from where the name of " Prades-le-Lez".
Under Louis XIV was built the castle of Restinclières, with a few kilometers in the North of the village him even, from now on département house of the environment.
In first half of the 20th century, Prades remains a small village and little populated. It is as from the years 1970 qu ' it will begin its rise, an important rise which is carried out in little time as the demographic trends show it. The construction of the " new center" (today Place Jean Jaurès and Place of the Market with the gymnasium, the extension of the elementary school, the room Jacques Brel, etc…) begin with the beginning of the year 1980 on the site from vines. One still distinguishes some remaining pieces in neighbouring houses.
Currently, a program of restoration and general installation named " Prades Lez 2015 " is in hand, with in particular the restoration of the center, the Northern medieval door as well as the refitting of the new center, the square of the church…
