The poya or assembled in Alpage is the name of the Transhumance in the the Alps Suisse S. This term is also used in France in particular in the valley of Chamonix in the Alps.
In Switzerland, in the village of Estavannens (in Gruyere), Poya is a secular Tradition which perdure, where art and popular holiday unite with the Agriculture. This area is specialized in the breeding and the manufacture of Fromage. The cheese of Gruyère is known since XVIe century. It is a Fromage with the whole cow's milk, with believed milk.
Rise with the mountain pasture and the désalpe
The Troupeau X of Vache S spend the summer months to the Alpage. Displacements which are the rise in mountain pasture in spring like the Désalpe (or Rindyà ) in autumn became Défilé S where the Armailli is proud of Parade R with its animals, which are decorated for the occasion.
For the poya and the rindyà , the armailli carries the " bredzon" Sunday, the capet, beautiful the loyi (pocket with salt) nine and the canes with the hand. The cows are bichonnées and flowered. Part of the herd carries the grosses sonnailles with beautiful embroidered belts and the initial ones of the owner. The train of the country cottage transports the material to the place where one can arrive with a Char drawn by a Mulet: the trunks of the armaillis and all the Tool S of the Country cottage, i.e. the Bucket with Milk, small buckets with Cream, large the whip, it section-to curdle, the Strainer with its support, the buckets with To milk, the Churn, the oji (Frame being used to transport cheeses on the head and the shoulders).
At the XVIIIe century, there was nearly a hundred mountain pastures in activity. At that time, the annual production is of 14 ' 000 Meule S of cheeses. In this context, Poya is known well beyond the campaigns. The Gruyere provided herds to the princely families of France. Those were then interested in the parades of Poya.
The armaillis also ravelled with the Fête of the vine growers of Vevey as of 1819.
Popular art
As of 1800, a Painting, often naive, represents this transhumance. The tables painted by the Berger S are named poya .
The origin and the function of these tables are to provide the Inventaire Troupeau, people and material going to the mountain pasture. These tables are then laid out on the pediment S or with the top of the Fenêtre S of each house. They are a sign of Prospérité. One indexes of them approximately 800 in the area of Gruyère.
Today of many painters carry out new paintings, straight inspired of the tables of time.
One can see the rise with the mountain pasture generally there.
Here for example here the representation of a Shepherd with his herd of Cows and a cart filled with hay drawn by a Horse the whole on a bottom from mountain landscape, pointing out the the French or Swiss Alps.
Many Poyas are also carried out with snow-covered landscapes.
Popular holiday
With Estavannens in May 1956 takes place the first popular holiday of the Poya d' Estavannens organized by association gruérienne for the costume and the habits. It celebrates the 75e birthday of the publication, the May 21st 1881, of a Poème published by Etienne Fragnière telling the rise with the mountain pasture.
Since, the festival was renewed in 1960, 1966, 1976, 1989 and 2000.
