Powhatan
The Powhatans are a confederation of Amerindian tribes of North America speaking the algonquin having lived in current the Virginia. It would have had its first continuous relationship with Europeans since that it is there that was installed the first permanent colony of England: Jamestown. Following revolts, the confederation was dispersed in 1644. However, of the descendants of the tribes having belonged to this confederation always exist in Virginia: Pamunkey, Mattaponi and Chickahominy. Their language is not spoken any more since the XIXe century. They are recognized like Indians at the federal level and would be at the present time (2006) more than three thousand.
The tribe was directed by Powhatan then Opchanacanough.
Pocahontas would result from this tribe.
