Seth Barnes Nicholson (November 12th 1891 - July 2nd 1963) was a American Astronome . He was born with Springfield, in the state of the Illinois. He made his studies with the Drake University, where he was discovered a passion for astronomy.
In 1914 with the Observatory Lick of the the University of California with Santa Cruz, while it observed Pasiphaé, a the moon of Jupiter recently discovered, it discovered a news of it: Sinopé, of which it calculated the Orbite for its thesis of doctorate in 1915.
It passed all its career to the Observatoire of the Mount Wilson, where it discovered the three other moons jovienne: Lysithéa and Carmelite friar in 1938, then Ananké in 1951, and finally a Trojan Asteroid, (1647) Menelaus. It also calculated the orbits of several Comet S, like that of Pluton.
Sinopé, Lysithéa, Carmelite friar and Ananké were simply named " Jupiter IX" , " Jupiter X" , " Jupiter XI" and " Jupiter XII" by their discoverer. Their current names theirs were allotted only in 1975, Nicholson itself being always refused to propose names.
With the Mount Wilson , his principal spot related to the Solar activity, and it produced during decades of the reports/ratios on the activity of the sunspots. It also took part in a certain number of forwardings intended to observe eclipse S, in particular in order to measure the luminosity and the temperature of the solar Couronne.
With the beginning of the year 1920, Nicholson and Edison Pettit carried out the first systematic observations of the celestial objects in the Infrarouge. They used a Thermocouple with vacuum to measure the infra-red radiations and to deduce the temperature from it from the the Moon (what led to the theory according to which the Moon was covered with a fine layer of dust acting like a Isolant), as well as the temperature of Planet S, of the sunspots and star S. Their temperature measurements of the closest giant stars brought to the first calculations of diameter of stars.
Of 1943 with 1955, he was also writer of the Publications off the Astronomical Society off the Pacific , of which he was president twice.
It is deceased with Los Angeles.
