Powerplant of Augst-Wyhlen

The powerplant of Augst-Wyhlen is a complex located on the the Rhine and gathering a stopping feeding two power stations Hydroélectrique S, as well as a lock. It is located at the border between the Suisse and the Germany.

Situation geography

The complex is located close to the mouth of the Ergolz in the Rhine, at the Swiss border on Right Bank between the communes of Augst (in the canton of Basle-Countryside) and of Kaiseraugst (in the canton of Argovie) and allemande on left bank with the commune of Wyhlen.

History

Both Stopping S hydroelectric of Augst and Wyhlen are built simultaneously between 1908 and 1912. The company responsible for the dam Augst is the Kraftwerk Augst AG (KWA), a member of Axpo pertaining for 80% to the company AEW Energie AG of the canton of Argovie and for 20% with the canton of Basle-Countryside. The company responsible for that of Wyhlen is the Energiedienst Holding AG which belongs (in 2003) to 76% with EnBW.

Lock

The lock of origin is replaced in 1992 by new a 110 meters length construction, against 88 meters with old, for total costs of approximately 200 million Swiss francs. This lock is the last of Haut-Rhin and is completely operated by remote control. On the side of the lock is installed a scale with fish which makes it possible the species of the Rhine to go up this one for the laying.

Technical data

Stopping with an overall length of 212 meters and 10 valves, each one of more than 100 tons. The two factories included/understood each one in the beginning 10 groups of turbines Francis of which 7 were transformed into groups of turbines Kaplan for Augst and 6 for Wyhlen.
