Powerful Louis

Louis Powerful , born with the Châtelet-in-Brie the September 22nd 1769 and died in Paris the January 10th 1843, is a French engineer geographer and mathematician.

Involved early by its taste for the exact sciences, it is named colonel with the body of the engineers geographers of the Armée with the Western Pyrenees in 1792, then professor with the central school of Agen in 1795. In 1802 and 1804, it is charged to raise the charts of the isle of Elba in Italy. He is elected member of the Academy of Science in 1828.

In addition to several memories, he is the author of works of geodesy and mathematics.

  • Collection of various proposals for a geometry, solved or shown by the algebraic analysis, according to the principles of Monge and Lacroix, with the use of those which follow the elementary treaty of application of the algebra to the geometry of this last (1801)
  • Traité geodesy or exposure of the astronomical and trigonometrical methods, applied either to the measurement of the ground, or with the clothes industry of the groundwork of the charts and plans (1805)
  • Traité topography, of land surveying and levelling (1807)
  • Cours of mathematics to the use of the military imperial schools (1809)
  • Supplement with the second book of the Treaty of topography, containing the theory of projections of the charts (1810)
  • Supplement with the Treaty of geodesy (1827)
  • New geometrical Description of France (2 volumes, 1832-1840)
