Power station of Strong Saint-Vrain
The Centrale of Strong Saint-Vrain is a powerplant with natural gas located close to the town of Platteville in the north of the Colorado at the the United States. It was a nuclear plant before being converted with gas.
History
The current power station with gas has a capacity of 720 MWe, the owner and owner is Xcel Energy which was before the company of public service of Colorado. It is exploited in this form since 1996.
Previously, this power station was the first and the only nuclear plant built in Colorado. It was exploited of 1976 to 1989 with an engine of capacity of 300 MWe. This engine was also the only cooled high-temperature reactor with the gas (HTGR) built in the United States. The primary education cooling agent was the helium which cannot become radioactive when it is irradiated by neutrons and which could heat water through a generator of vapeur.
This forever with satisfaction functioned nuclear reactor, various incidents occurred during the exploitation. As the exploitation became too expensive it was decided to close it in 1989 and to convert it into turbine with natural gas what was made in 1996. Since two other turbines and built in 2001.
