With 708 languages on a total of 1248 according to ethnologue.com, the group known as exchange-Eastern is most numerous among the Austronesian branch of the Langues austronésiennes.

This group is subdivided in its turn in 2 large sub-groups:

• central Austronesian (168 languages): Moluques, Small Islands of the Probe, Western New Guinea
• Eastern Austronesian (539 languages): Moluques, Western New Guinea, Micronesia, Mélanésie, Polynesia

and a not classified language, the kuri of the province Indonesia of Papua.

In the sub-group Eastern, the 498 languages known as " oceanic " indexed are most numerous by far.
