Power Macintosh 9600
The Power Macintosh 9600 left in February 1997 and replaced the Power Macintosh 9500 in the elite of the range Apple. The 9600 is characterized by its new case (divided with the Power Mac 8600 launched at the same time). Model of ergonomics and accessibility to the various components, this case named K2 break with the old case equipping the 9500, which was inherited the Quadra 800 launched in February 1993.
Level features, the 9600 came in three models, always using processor PowerPC 604 E but thorough at frequencies of 200 or 233 MHz. A configuration bi-processor equipped with 2 processors with 200 MHz was also available. It is it should be noted that at that time, and before the arrival of Mac OS X, the multiprocessing did not bring any significant profit in performances, with share for some rare professional applications optimized especially for (like certain filters Photoshop). The 9600 integrated also 32 Me memory, 4 Go of Hard drive and a video Carte powerful equipped with 4 Me of VRAM (a IMS Twin Turbo 128), which allowed a posting until 1600 by 1200 pixels. The Mémoire hiding place, big factor of performances, remained of 512 Kio, and could not be increased, which was regrettable because to push this memory hiding place to 1 Me would have made it possible to increase further by 5 or 10% the already exceptional performances of this machine.
The version waiter of the Power Mac 9600/233 was marketed at the end of April 1997 under the name of Workgroup Server 9650 . Its only difference compared to the version general public was the provided specific software continuation.
They were updated in August 1997 with two models given rhythm at the speeds record of 300 and 350 MHz. A Workgroup Server 9650/350 appeared too. This last model integrated a chart Ethernet 100 Basset hound (a first) and a chart Ultra/Wide SCSI-3 ultra rapid with two hard drives of 4 Go.
Although the performances of these models reached a level ever reached, these models were sold little and disappeared quickly from the catalog bus of the machines equipped with a new processor even more powerful, the G3, were awaited for the following months. Indeed, the Power Mac G3 left one month later and appeared faster, in its version 266 MHz, that the Power Mac 9600 with 350 MHz.
