PowerBook 5300

The PowerBook 5300 is a Laptop of Apple. It was the first PowerBook to use a Microprocesseur PowerPC. It was launched in August 1995 in four different versions, according to the screen and the configuration. The 5300, line entry, was the only one with being equipped with a screen posting in black and white (with matrix passivates 9,5"). The three other models (5300cs, 5300c, 5300ce) integrated a color screen, which moreover posted a larger diagonal (10,4"). The 5300ce supported a resolution of 800 × 600 pixels, a first for PowerBook. The first three models were equipped with a microprocessor PowerPC 603e given rhythm to 100 MHz, and the top-of-the-range model, the 5300ce, used the same processor, but turning with 117 MHz. The basic prices were respectively of 2200 $, 2700 $, 3700 $ and 6500 $.

Although representing an enormous projection compared to the former generation of PowerBook (most powerful PowerBook hitherto, the PowerBook 540c, used a processor Motorola 68040 with 33 MHz), PowerBook 5300 were victims of a great number of mechanical problems. Most important was surely the problems of battery: PowerBook 5300 innovated while being the first portables to use a battery lithium ion, but Apple was forced to point out all the models in order to replace the battery by traditional Nor-MH, after many users had seen their machine burning because of the battery. Moreover, the plastic of the case of certain models proved to be particularly fragile with the shocks and was scaled. The problems of PowerBook 5300 arrived at one time when Apple knew serious financial problems, and were worth a reputation to him to sell not very reliable machines. Nevertheless, after correction of these problems, PowerBook 5300 were very good machines.
