Pouzzoles (sometimes Putéoles , in Italian Pozzuoli ) is a Italian city of approximately 82  000 inhabitants located in the Province of Naples in Campania, famous as of the Antiquity. What characterizes Pouzzoles is its past, and the volcanicity in the neighborhoods.

The port is located at the northern end of the gulf of Naples, and is the landing stage for Ischia and Procida.

History

The Latin name of Pouzzoles is Puteoli , which means well; that comes from the “volcanic water wells” (water of Pouzzoles) famous since Antiquity in particular to overcome sterility.

In 531 front JC, colonists of the island of Samos in Aegean Sea combined with inhabitants of Cumes (in the west of Naples) found Dikaiarkheia (Dicéarchie in other words the City of Justice) at the origin of the town of Puteoli. It is used then as commercial port with the Greek colony of Cumes, in Campanie.

Pouzzoles becomes a Roman colony in 194 av. J. - C. the city was equipped with an excellent port, with a series of basins communicating (comparable with a lock), a pier, as from second century BC, protected the winds from the South. It was an important commercial port and travellers. One can see there an old market with edible, known as “the Temple of Sérapis”, and the Amphithéâtre Flavius , built at the time of Vespasien (Roman Emperor of 69 with 79).

At the 17th century, the évèque of the city makes build a Cathédrale by using the structure of the temple of Auguste, in order to erase the pagan vestiges “”.

Volcanicity

Volcanicity produced the Pouzzolane, a very fine sand which allowed the settling of the first Ciment S.

The city underwent between 1982 and 1984 a Bradyséisme which obliged to evacuate the old city in 1983; the ground was raised of 1,87 m in three years. This phenomenon revealed many ancient vestiges. The phenomenon is due to a magmatic pocket located under the city.

Volcanicity is also at the origins of the Champs Phlégréens located at the neighborhoods
