It is made up of eleven people impassioned by the history of the commune. It meets every Tuesday afternoon with the town hall to make research starting from the communal records and/or departmental. It carried out several documents, readable in town hall, made an exposure of its work in 2001, animates the Patrimoine day, receives visitors and wrote all the texts which follow.

Origin of the name of Pouëze

Pouëze is known since the 11th century in the forms of Poysa which wants to say " Landes" (1040), Puzia (1060), Putia (1082. The current C-W communication Pouëze appears since 1214. This name comes from former French who wants to say " ground dépouillée". It derives from Latin " putare" , to cut, to prune which indicates a clearing of forest and which points out the proximity of the forest of Longuenée. (Another explanation is advanced. The Latin word pisum , pea (the vegetable) can have known an evolution in poise. In Anjou, the pea which decides poué is more precisely the dried bean. A ground of bean culture could indeed explain the presence of Holy Emerance which one came to beseech so that the evils of belly cease.)

The inhabitants of Pouëze name Pouèzéens.

The count of Poëze

Jehan of Poëze lived in Pouëze in year 950. This family left there about the year 1250. Where did she live? perhaps in " the castrum Putia" on the feudal mound?

The many descendants disseminated in Anjou were found about 2003 in the village, in the search of their origins. To the Holy-Émérance vault the count Jacques of Poëze offered and makes fix a plate with their blazon: three dark bands evoking three brothers died at the time of a crusade and a message of friendship is engraved there: " Let us keep the memory of the past to give roots to the time which vient" and the currency of the " family; Auxilium AD alta" , which means " To carry helps to noble the causes".

The town hall in the old presbytery

This beautiful masonry was built in 1627 as the date carved above the principal main door testifies some. In fact work of restoration of the building made it possible to discover this date because so far, one knew only one engraved stone preserved at the presbytery and which carries the following inscription: “I was posed on May 30th, 1740 by Mr. Louis Maugars, cleaned priest, lord of this parish”. This micaceous chalk stone, preserved well is now sealed in the wall of the driving staircase on the first floor.

This presbytery in the beginning was surrounded by ditches, communicating by a channel with the water square of Arquenay. Around the presbytery, extended its field with bakery, farmyard, fuye, cattle shed, stable, kitchen garden, orchard, hedge, vine, wild rabbit, meadow. The priest owed his title of lord to the king Louis XI who founded Holy-Émérance like appendix of the cure.

This building was renovated with the concern of the restitution to identical to install the Town hall there, officially on December 5th, 1992.

The presbytery took the place of the old principal town hall with 45 rue in the house announced by a plate where one can read: “in remembering its family which gave four mayors to Pouëze, Francis Breast-bone-Lepage bequeathed its house to its grateful fellow-citizens - 1934”.

the church

The church was rebuilt in 1838 on the ruins of old whose origin would go back to the 12th century. It is dedicated to Victor saint.

In 1865, the church became too small. The population increased much because of the development of the salte quarries. It is increased on the cemetery by demolishing the three vaults there.

One remakes a larger chorus by associating a second transept there what gives him the original shape of a cross of Lorraine. This new massive part is of neo-gothic style, the vaults being surcroisées warheads.

Inside, in the second transept on the right, a remarkable stained glass with the rich person colors is classified. It is the work of Baker of Turns. It represents holy François d' Assise trying to convert - in vain - the sultan of Egypt, surrounded enturbannés characters, sphinx, of obelisk.

The way of slate cross was carried out by Mr. Robin, sculptor angevin.

The modest bell-tower proudly draws up towards the sky its slate arrow.

The Holy-Émerance vault

  • History

At the end of the 15th century, Louis XI coveted Anjou (province belonging to his/her uncle king Rene) to increase the kingdom of France. There it liked to come to drive out with his friend Louis de Beaumont, lord of Plessis-Macé, while supervising the heritage. During a shooting party in forest of Longuenée which extended then until Plessis-Macé, it was taken violent colics “which folded it into two and collapsed it on the grass”. Stuffed Jean, his treasurer, lord of Plessis-Stuffed, who accompanied it, advised to him to call upon holy Emérance, which had an oratory with Pouèze, village very close, and which cured evils of belly. He beseeched it, he was cured and he promised to make build a vault in the place of the oratory. The vault was built in 1472. It made him make a beautiful silver statue gilded there made transport relics of the holy one.

  • the vault

Long of 70 feet out of 26 broad, the vault is directed of west in east. It is built out of granite and micaceous chalk, with massive buttresses against the push of the vaults.

It is a vault with single nave with an apse and a side chapel with intersecting ribs.

The furnace bridge preserves its old stone retable of the 15th century, flanked of two pinnacles tapered with a edge of delicate garlands of flowers, vine branches and arabesques. A very beautiful modern polychrome stone statue of holy replaces the silver statue gilded offered by Louis XI (of the size of a little girl) and melted with the revolution. It represents co. bearing Emérance in its apron the stones of its lapidation.

The door sacraire, with the 15th century, is decorated in folds with towel.

This remarkable building is classified historic building since 1959, the door sacraire and the retable since 1979.

  • the pilgrimage

A ceremony takes place there each year, around on January 23rd (co. Emérance is on January 23rd). During a mass, one comes to request the holy one against the evils of belly, the fears. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the faithful ones taste plum with brandy.

In one more remote time of the thousands of pilgrims ran of all shares this day but one also came in pilgrimage at the time of natural disasters.

  • Holy Émérance

Sainte Émérance (or Emerantienne) is a holy Roman. She lived in Rome at the end of the time of great persecutions, about year 304. She was of modest condition and foster sister of holy Agnès, martyrized on January 21st. January 23rd, whereas she requested on the tomb of her sister, she was lapidated by the Roman soldiers after having shown an admirable bravery. She was 13 years old. Consequently, the brave men called upon it to have courage and the cowards to overcome the fear. As the fear is often causes colics or evils of belly, one called upon it for any intestinal disturbance. The cure of the king Louis XI reinforced this belief.

  • Holy Emérance in Anjou

let us request holy Emérance

Which cures evil of paunch

(old proverb angevin)

Three sites accommodated the relics of the holy one: Pouëze, Carmelite friars of Angers and the Member.

The church of Pellouailles and the vault of Chandemanche with Morannes were dedicated to him.

One found his statue with Chateaupanne, Cizay, Varennes under Montsoreau, Vern of Anjou, sinistrality with the Ladies of Montillier, St Georges of Wood, Epiré, Andard, Brigné, Chamteussé on Baconne, Rochemeunier. Several of these statues have disappeared for one half-century.

In the church of Cunault, one finds the image of holy painted on one of the columns (XV century) whose face is almost completely unobtrusive.

With St Macaire of Wood, a table evoked the martyr of the holy one.

In Cheviré the Red, stained glass a XIX century old is dedicated to him.

In Louresse-Rochemenier, St Georges of Wood one drew the bell to move away the storm.

In Champteussé on Baconne, one called upon co. Emerentienne a candle lit with the hand to relieve his evils of belly.

the castle of Villenière

The word " Villenière" comes from Latin Villa Lineris who in 1123 means “village where one cultivates the flax”. With the wire of time, Ville Flax fields contracted in Villenière.

To the 12th century, the field belonged to the church of Nantes. Then it was the property of several big families before being acquired in 1736 per Jean-Jacques Talour of Cartrie, ordinary Master of the room of the accounts of Brittany, member of the academy of Angers. To its death in 1764, the field returned to his/her son All Saints' day Ambroise who made career in the weapons. It engaged with all its family in the war of the Vendée. One of his/her sisters, Céleste Bulkeley, married to William Bulkeley emigrating Irish was one of impetuous the amazones of Cart to the head of the Vendean army. Of return of transfered of Galerne, it left the Vendean army, succeeds in passing to England to foot with its young person wire fifteen year old. It wrote its painful memories there. It returned in 1801, ruined.

The field was sold in 1810 with the Viscount Gabriel Amys of the Culvert . It is him which made restore the castle then to add two square turrets at the ends of the frontage.

It made carve its armorial bearings on the pediment: of money to the broken rafter of mouths (red) accompanied by three vineleaves of sinople (green) ; and those of Madam: money with three shells of mouths; holding: a colleté greyhound of mouths; supports: a laid down lion, branches of bay-tree, a Maltese cross with dove, the overcome whole of the crown of Viscount.

One finds a resemblance of architecture to the castle of Montgeoffroy with Mazé (Maine-et-Loire). The long frontage and the buildings of service frame the main courtyard which opens on the large meadow, crossing of an avenue to the beautiful wrought iron grid. The castle became the property of Mr. of Rochebrochard d' Auzay about 1870. The Salte quarries of Angers acquired of it then to place executives and workmen there. The commune bought it in 1979 and made it restore as well as the buildings of service via Habitat 49, company of HLM to make a score of rental residences of it.
