Potomac
The Potomac is a river of the the United States.
Geography
The Potomac is a 665 km length river which is thrown in the Baie of Chesapeake, located on the east coast of the the United States.
It takes its source to 391 m of altitude in the south-west of the state of the Maryland; its course, length of approximately 665 km, is used as natural border initially between Maryland and the Virginia-Western , then between Maryland and the Virginia.
It sprinkles the towns of Cumberland (Maryland) and especially Washington, cd., located at the entry of its estuary of 182 km.
History
When the American Civil War in 1861 bursts, part of Virginia makes secession, the counties of the North-West remaining in the Union (those constitute the current state of Virginia-Western); the state of Maryland, although slave, also remains in the Union.
Thus most of the course of Potomac and its estuary formed the limit between the Union and the States Confédérés.
Also this river keeps it a historical importance for American.
Air crash
January 13rd, 1982, a Boeing 737 of Air Florida was damaged in the river right after its takeoff because of a snowstorm.
On the 79 people on board, there were only 5 survivors, thanks to the heroism of certain passengers, who left their life in ice-cold water of Potomac. The scene was held under the cameras of television.
