Poti

Poti (in géorgien ფოთი) is a town of Georgia located in the Mingrélie-Low province of Svanétie (Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti), on the east coast of the Black Sea.

The city is one of the three large ports of the country. Poti was founded at the 7th century before Jesus-Christ as a Greek colony, named Phasis, at the place where the river Rioni, one of the greatest rivers of the west of Georgia, is thrown in the Black Sea.

Niko Nikoladze is regarded as the founder of modern Poti.

Military use

Poti shelters the general headquarters of the Navy géorgienne and constitutes a strategic place on the Black Sea.

Twinning

Poti is twinned with the town of LaGrange, located in the American State of Georgia.
