Potenza is a Italian city, chief town of the area of Basilicate or Lucanie, and also of the Province of Potenza.

history
Potenza is populated since the 4th century before J. - C. At the 3rd century, it becomes Roman prefecture under the name of Potentia.At the 5th century after J. - C., it undergoes the invasions lombardes and becomes archbishop's palace. It takes a certain importance at the time of the domination Norman.
In 1694, the city was shaven by one of the terrible earthquakes which enamel the history of Potenza. That of 1857 destroyed many historic buildings. The last earthquake of November 23rd, 1980 affected all Basilicate and also Potenza. It made nearly 3000 dead with a magnitude 7 on the scale of Richter.
Potenza is declared place chief of area by Napoleon in 1806.
The city was bombarded in 1943.
