Potentiometer

A potentiometer is a variable type of Résistance on three terminals, of which is connected to a cursor moving on a resistant track finished by the two other terminals.

This system makes it possible to collect on the terminal connected to the cursor, a tension according to the position of the known as cursor and the tension to which resistance is subjected. There exists the equivalent in the form of Integrated circuit: it is the numerical potentiometer, henceforth very much used in electronics Analogique with order modern Numérique. 2

Types of potentiometer

A potentiometer can be:
  • rectilinear/rotary
  • linear/logarithmic curve
  • analogical/numerical
  • mono
  • /stereo
  • with off position (small notch when one turns it thoroughly on the left, related to a switch)
  • coupled (says itself of a numerical potentiometer ordered by an analogical potentiometer)

Linear potentiometer

A linear potentiometer is a potentiometer whose value of resistance varies proportionally at the distance between its terminals and the cursor. It is used, for example in a variable source of tension. This principle is used in the measuring devices such as the Slide caliper.

Potentiometer logarithmic curve

The resistance of this type of potentiometer varies way Exponentielle, i.e. the value of its resistance increases or decreases more and more quickly when the cursor is moved. It is mainly used as button of control of volume (in an amplifying , for example)

Potentiometer with median catch

The potentiometer with Taken median, mainly used in old the amplifying, is not used any more since the end of the year 80.

This type of variable resistor is, electronically, almost equivalent with a potentiometer having two fixed resistances connected at the two boundaries which are not the cursor.

Uses of the potentiometers

Realization of an adjustable point of potential

Use in Variable resistor

One uses the potentiometer like a variable resistor in order to be able to modify the intensity of the current. This device is called a Rhéostat. Certain resistances which are conceived for this application are wound in a particular way: the section of the driver is more important at an end of the potentiometer.
