Postpartum

The period of the postpartum extends from the end of the Accouchement until the return of layers, i.e. the first rules after the Grossesse. It is one period new at the same time psychic and family upheavals (key period for the installation of the relation mother-child, of discovered newborn, family changes), but also physical with the brutal loss of the physiological reference marks and anatomical related to the pregnancy. The postpartum is thus a period at the risk of difficulties, sometimes of complications, related to the upheavals of all the reference marks of a Femme in particular when it is about a first child, and who deserves for these reasons a follow-up and an special attention.

Physiology of the postpartum

  • the rules begin again after 2 months, this period being able to be prolonged up to 6 months in the event of breast feeding.

Psychology of the postpartum

Normal continuation

  • Birth and development of the relation mother-child.
  • Discovered maternity.
  • Réappropriation of the body, resumption of the sexual activities in a few weeks.

Difficulties, pathologies

  • a transitory depressive syndrome, contemporary of the milky rise, is very frequent: it is the “Baby blues”. It concerns up to 50% of the women, her evolution is almost always favorable in a few days.

  • postnatal depression (to be supplemented)
  • maternal collapse (to be supplemented, cf in particular work of Jean-Marie Delassus, founder of the Maternologie)
  • Possibility of post-traumatic stress (to be supplemented)
