Post-impressionism
The post-impressionism is a whole of the artistic currents which, during the period going roughly of 1885 with 1915, diverging from the Impressionnisme or being opposed to him (neo-impressionism, Synthétisme, symbolism, nabis…).
The post-impressionism term is an extremely fuzzy name, applied mainly to Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and Seurat, but often used to describe other artists progressists who followed the great decade of impressionism (1870 - 1880), like Matisse, Bonnard and Decroix.
One can differentiate two kinds of paintings within the post impressionism.
-
the influence of Seurat
-
the " couple" Gauguin/Van Gogh
Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh are brought to live together three weeks with Arles. At this time, they are involved in debt, tended and contracted. Gauguin thus sells some of its fabrics with Théo, the brother of Vincent, in exchange of a money little. The two painters have techniques which oppose them. While Vincent asserts himself to go to paint on the reason (with fabrics and rest) whatever the climatic conditions, Paul, painted to him of memory in the workshop.
