Posad
The word posad (in Cyrillic) indicates between the one village (or colony of settlement) often located behind ramparts or palisades and a ditch, but not forming part of the strengthened city (the Kremlin). The posady were inhabited by craftsmen and merchants.
The word posad becomes an official term during the Russian empire to indicate a type of semi-urban village.

A posadnik is also in medieval Russia an elected representative of the city (Novgorod is the first city to set up this institution, then Pskov).
