Porvoo

Porvoo ( Borgå in Swedish) is a city of some 47.000 inhabitants, on the southern part of the Finland. It is located at about fifty kilometers in the east of Helsinki, connected by main road 7 (road E18). It is crossed by the river Porvoonjoki, which wants to say " River of Porvoo". " Porvoo" is a transfer Finnois Swedish Borgå which wants to say " river of the fort". It is the capital of the area of Uusimaa of the East.

Porvoo is one of the six towns of Finland founded with the Moyen-âge, which bequeathed a cathedral to him. The first texts mentioning city date from the 14th century. The cathedral was burnt the May 29th 2006. The roof was completely destroyed but the essence of the interior was safeguarded. The complete restoration should nevertheless take approximately 3 years.

The city has also many buildings of wood. One of the most known houses is that of Johan Ludvig Runeberg, poet national of Finland, which lived in Porvoo during many years.
