Portrush

The town of Portrush is located in the county of Antrim, in Northern Ireland. Its name comes from the Irish Port Kings , which means the " port of the promontoire". The major part of the old city (whose station, the majority of the hotels of the restaurants and the bars) is built on a peninsula of one kilometer and half length, Ramore Head, which points towards the north-north-west. The town of Portrush counted 6372 inhabitants at the time of the census of 2001. Except season, the city is a dormitory town, populated students of the university of Ulster (University off Ulster) from which one of the campuses is with Coleraine.

Although being geographically located in the County of Antrim, Portrush belongs to the district of the East Londonderry for the assembly of Northern Ireland.

History

Disorders

The Disorders appeared in Portrush primarily on April 11th 1987, where two Protestant members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) were assassinated by two members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army at the time of their patrol to foot in Main Street.

Demography

The town of Portrush is a " Small Ville" , after the criteria of Northern Ireland, the office of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), i.e. its population lies between 4500 and 10.000 people.

At the time of the census of 2001, Portrush counted 6.372 inhabitants. Among them:

  • 20,8% had less than 16 years and 23,1% were 60 years old or more
  • the men constituted 46,2% of the population (53,8% were women)
  • 23,6% of the population came from a catholic medium and 70,6% of a Protestant medium
  • 5,1% of the population from 16 to 74 years were with unemployment.
