Portishead is the birthplace of Barrow. This name decides “Por-tis-head” with a “S” in the medium, and not “Por-Ti-shead”.Geoff Barrow benefitted from its various experiments in studio, in particular as an assistant during the recording of the famous album of Massive Attack, Blue Lines .
It is with all these influences which it wove the so typical sound of Portishead, helped in that by the guitarist Adrian Utley, come from the jazz, and of a sound engineer, Dave McDonald. In hardly a disc, the group became the true symbol of the Trip hop.
After having left a small film for which he wrote the band its, Portishead signed a contract and its first album, Dummy , is appeared in 1994, with Gibbons with the song, Barrow with the keyboards, Clive Deamer with the battery, and Adrian Utley with the guitar. In spite of the timidity of the group with regard to the press, the album was a business success, as well in Europe as in the United States, just like the individual extracts of the album, Glory Box and Sour Times . The British press elects Dummy like album of the year. The trio receives in 1995 very coveted Mercury Prize, preceding Oasis, Blur and Pj Harvey.
A second album, Portishead , left in 1997. Individual the All undermines which of it was drawn had less success than the precedents. An album live , mainly recorded in Roseland with New York with an orchestra of 35 musicians, left in 1998 and makes it possible to see that the group takes all its dimension on scene. In 1998, Beth Gibbons then decides to take the air a little… It publishes Out Of Season in 2002, in duet with Rustin Man, pseudonym of Paul Webb, former bass player of the group Talk Talk.
There were rumors on the exit of a third album in 2003, possibly named Alien , but, at the beginning of 2004, no new album left, and the official site of Portishead contradicted the rumor. Beth Gibbons however announces, on its own site, that she currently works with the development of the next album of the group. New rumors let think that the recording of the album would be finished in 2006, but it is not yet for this time.
