Portchester Castle
Portchester Castle (Latin name: Portus Adurni ) () is a strong Roman located at Portchester, England, at the bottom of bay of Portsmouth. It is undoubtedly the strong Roman best preserved of all Europe.
The fort was built in IIIe century to protect the southern part from England against the invasions saxonnes. It is a strong square of 200 meters side, built in sat of limestone and flint.
It owes its excellent conservation with a continuous use of almost sixteen centuries: it was useful until the XIXe century, and accommodated prisoners of the Napoleonean wars.
The enclosure is complete. The north-western quarter is occupied by a Norman castle.
It is there that Henri V embarked towards the Bataille of Azincourt.
The fort contains also a small vault of XIIe century, with the south-eastern corner.
It is opened to the visitors.
