Portalegre

Portalegre is a city and also a municipality of the Portugal. It is the capital of the District of Portalegre located in the Alentejo. The town of Portalegre counts: 15238 inhabitants.

The municipality gathers 10 parishes forming a territory of 447,1 km ² and cash: 24756 inhabitants (2006).

History

Portalegre was founded in 1259, under the reign of Alphonse III of Portugal date on which the king would have granted a charter to him raising it the statute of village. Thereafter, it ordered with the former population of Portelos to rebuild the city which had been shaven by the skirmishes between Chrétiens and Moslems. The town of Portelos was then re-elected in Portus Alacer (what means dry port). In 1290, from its strategic importance Denis I {{er}} builds a fortress and double the ramparts (a few important pieces remain still today). Moreover, it will have made build its castle in order to guarantee the integrity of the Portuguese territory. It consisted of 12 turns and 7 doors (even 8 according to certain historians).

At the end of the 14th century, in 1376, the Convent of Santa Clara is built. A few years later, on July 6th, 1387, the inhabitants see themselves rewarding for the title of " Loyal" by the king Jean I {{er}}. This honorary title their was allotted at the time of the the Cortes of Coimbra because of the support of the city to the cause of independence.

March 29th, 1511, the village is seen allotting a new charter by the king Manuel I {{er}}. In 1549, by ordinance of the king Jean III, the pope Paul III gives the authorization of the creation of the diocese of Portalegre. The following year, on May 23rd, 1550, the same king raises Portalegre with the row of city. Since every May 23rd, one has fun the festival to remember this event it.
